Their Annual Encampment Proceedings Reports
The Department of Texas, G.A.R., conducted annual statewide encampments, where veterans gathered to conduct business, elect officers, discuss veterans' affairs, and renew the fraternal bonds formed during the war years. Remarkably, many of the proceedings reports from those annual encampments still survive - extending from 1890 through 1932. They provide an important window into the issues and topics of importance of the day through their officer reports and discussions. The journals also provide a snapshot of the internal workings of the Department, and illustrate how the Union veteran members of the G.A.R. in Texas faithfully followed the principles and objects of the National Order.
